Absolutely confident in his dominance, the Tupuxuara has spent several weeks defending his perch from rival males and asserting his supremacy of the aerial domain. Flushing capillary beds throughout his skull with blood, he fully extends his wings and shrieks a melodious call, signaling his fitness to all members of his species. The vibrant display comes at a cost, however. He has expended too much energy and shakes bodily with the effort. His reluctance to abandon his roost, even for an instant, has forced him to forgo many meals in favor of an attractive territory. As his crest begins to dip, his presentation finally pays off. A female circles him, renewing the Tupuxuara's ostentatious fervor. His fitness display draws her in, and soon the two engage in courtship, mate, and construct a nest.
Having completed their new aerie, the Tupuxuara are drawn to commotion in the waters adjacent their home. Smaller pterosaurs dart about while fins slice through the waves, hinting at feasting sharks in the murk below. All this activity can mean only one thing - fish! The ravenous male Tupuxuara can no longer rein in his appetite and takes to the air. He soars toward the feeding frenzy, pursued readily by his mate. The shadows cast by their 5-meter wingspans scatter the other pterosaurs, allowing the two to trawl the ocean surface unimpeded and scoop up copious mouthfuls of fish. Once the male has filled his maw to capacity with the squirming delights, he banks sharply back to the nest. He never sees the shark rocket from the waves and close its jaws on his mate, shredding her thin, membranous wings and crushing her delicate torso in one sickeningly quick bite. A tail slaps the surface and all evidence of the violence vanishes with the ceaseless motion of the water.
Back at the nest, the male Tupuxuara has eaten his fill and towers over his remaining fish. He calls for the female, though her imposing form is noticeably absent from the sky. Bleating out repeatedly, he moves away from the nest to a nearby rock, the same rock on which he first wooed her with his display. He stands cacophonous vigil, desperately scanning the horizon for a companion who will never return.
